I just finished replacing the starter and i have to say, it isnt easy. Probably would have gone 500k miles easy. Recently when I rebuilt the engine in my BMW with 190k miles, I figured I'd rebuild the starter "while I was in there." I put in new brushes, while the original ones still had about 3/4 of life left in them. The only starter I've ever had fail was on a car like that (flaky fuel pump relay). The continual starting attempts without giving the starter time to cool down between tries would lead it to an early death. But similar to fuel pumps, they do sometimes get replaced due to mis-diagnosis, or as you're doing a pre-emptive repair.Īlso, in general (not specific to these cars), it seems that starters tend to fail following periods where there was something wrong with the engine (fuel, ECU, etc.) or electrical system (wiring, battery, relay, etc.) that was making it have starting problems. I have not noticed them failing on these cars, similar to fuel pumps. But my starter is working perfectly on my '99 at 236k miles.
